In Stephen’s Words

Strategic Leadership and Planning in Arts, Culture, and Nonprofit Innovation.
Strategic leadership and thoughtful planning are more vital than ever in the cultural and nonprofit landscape. At Civic Muse, we approach every project with purpose, integrity, and creativity — helping institutions navigate complex challenges while staying grounded in the values of reconciliation, equity, and civic trust. Innovation in our field isn’t just about doing something new — it’s about doing the right things with care, clarity, and community in mind.

In 100 years, I’d like to think there is a dialogue going on between the art gallery and the city and the people it serves.

“It was the trip to the North… that changed everything… Michael literally went back to the drawing board with his design… It wasn’t just about seeing the land and seeing the art and context. It was also the conversations that took place.”

“Inuit art in Canada has been largely curated by non‑Inuit people… How do we communicate the story of Inuit artmaking? We can’t do it in isolation.”

“It’s more than digital. In person, there’s nothing standing between you and the object.”

- Reflecting on the power of live, embodied art experiences

“His question to us was, ‘Can we move beyond looking at Inuit art outside of the larger body of contemporary art in Canada?’ And the answer was, ‘We have to.’”

“When I saw the magazine cover with the little image of WAG Qaumajuq on there, it just sent shivers down my spine… it raises the profile of art, Indigenous art, the Arctic, human rights, reconciliation…”
